ISTANBUL (Kyodo) A senior Japanese official of the International Monetary Fund on Wednesday welcomed the new government's focus on pursuing economic growth via domestic demand.

"It's important for Japan and China to stimulate domestic demand as the world economy is seeking a new balance," Takatoshi Kato, one of the deputy IMF managing directors, said in an interview.

Kato also called on the government of Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, who took office in mid-September, to be cautious about ending emergency measures to address the global financial crisis.
