Toshiba Corp. unveiled Monday its first Regza liquid crystal display television powered by the Cell processor, which allows viewers to record up to eight channels at the same time.

The 55-inch high-definition TV is expected to go on sale at the beginning of December at a market price of around ¥1 million.

The Cell Regza uses the same Cell Broadband Engine chip used in Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 game console, which was codeveloped by Toshiba, Sony and IBM Corp.

It allows viewers to record up to around 26 hours of programming, which can be stored on a 3-terabyte hard drive.

The TV can also display up to eight channels simultaneously. The panel is equipped with backlights that use light-emitting diodes delivering high contrast.

It can also reproduce video content downloaded from the Internet with enhanced clarity and sharpness, the company said.

Toshiba will display the Cell Regza TV at CEATEC Japan 2009, the country's biggest information technology and electronics fair, which starts Tuesday and runs five days at the Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba Prefecture. About 590 companies are expected to participate, down from 804 last year.
