MITO, Ibaraki Pref. (Kyodo) Deputy Rome Mayor Mauro Cutrufo offered an apology Saturday to a Japanese man who was given an outrageous bill after eating at a famous restaurant in June.

Cutrufo, now in Japan to attend an event related to Italy, invited Yasuyuki Yamada, a 35-year-old business owner from Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, to an Italian restaurant in the Tokyo Midtown complex in the Roppongi district.

Cutrufo gave Yamada a silver plate. Yamada accepted the gift and expressed his thanks.

Yamada and his girlfriend were handed a tab for about ¥95,000 after eating lunch at Il Passetto in June and reported the incident to police after paying the outrageous bill.
