The amount of untapped money in the fiscal 2009 extra budget could be as much as ¥8.3 trillion, brightening prospects for the Democratic Party of Japan to fund its key policies smoothly, a senior party lawmaker said Friday.

The amount tops the DPJ’s goal of raising ¥7.1 trillion for its election pledges in the year starting April 1.
