NEW YORK (Kyodo) Sony Corp. said Tuesday it will market an e-book device called the Reader Daily Edition that offers newspapers, magazines and book titles in time for the Christmas shopping season in the United States.

Sony is hoping the upgraded $399 reader will help it catch rival Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle.

The upgraded e-book reader is likely to give the e-book market a boost and could help raise newspaper subscriptions at a time when the industry is struggling to survive.

Like the Kindle, the Reader Daily Edition can download content via cell phone. It features a touch-screen interface and comes with a dictionary.

The pricing will charge $9.99 to read new book titles, including best sellers, and allow users to browse the digital holdings of public libraries over the Net for free for a limited time.

Sony will also offer a stripped-down Reader Touch Edition for $299 and a Reader Pocket Edition at $199 to be sold mainly at Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and other mass retailers.
