YOKOSUKA, Kanagawa Pref. (Kyodo) The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz made a port call Monday at the U.S. Navy base here.

The navy said the visit is intended to provide the crew with rest and to replenish supplies before the ship departs in a few days.

The carrier left its home port of San Diego at the end of July on a regularly scheduled deployment to the Western Pacific. It is believed to be keeping a watch on North Korea and engaging in other missions in place of the George Washington.
