Finance Minister Kaoru Yosano plans to promote Yasutake Tango, head of the Finance Ministry's Budget Bureau, to the post of administrative vice minister to replace Kazuyuki Sugimoto, ministry sources said Wednesday.

Tango, 58, served from April 2001 as a secretary of then Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi until he became director general of the ministry's Financial Bureau in October 2006.

He entered the ministry in 1974 after graduating from the University of Tokyo. He has been serving as chief of the Budget Bureau since last July.

Tango's new post is the highest-ranking bureaucratic position at the ministry.

Sugimoto is set to leave the ministry. Tango's appointment is expected to be announced informally in early July, according to the sources.
