The number of foreign nationals who stayed in Japan after their visas expired fell by nearly half to around 113,000 from 219,000 in the five years to Jan. 1, the Justice Ministry’s Immigration Bureau said Tuesday.

The number of people who entered Japan illegally fell to an estimated 15,000 to 23,000, down from 30,000, the bureau said. The estimates are based on information provided by foreign nationals caught by law enforcement authorities.
