Heavy snowfall on Saturday forced airlines to cancel more than 50 domestic flights to and from Hokkaido and areas on the Sea of Japan coast in Honshu.

Japan Airlines said it canceled flights from Tokyo's Haneda airport to such cities as Hakodate, Kushiro and Obihiro in Hokkaido, as well as to Izumo Airport in Shimane Prefecture, which closed its runway.

All Nippon Airways canceled flights to and from Yonago Airport in Tottori Prefecture, the carrier said. Hokkaido Air System halted 20 of its 24 scheduled flights for the day.

East Japan Railway and other railway operators also canceled six night trains, including the Akebono, which goes from Ueno in Tokyo to Aomori by traveling through Tohoku on the Sea of Japan side.

Earlier in the day, the Meteorological Agency warned that heavy snow would hit the Sea of Japan through Sunday because of a low-pressure system that was rapidly developing off the Sanriku coast and moving north-northeast.
