LOS ANGELES (Kyodo) Three Japanese sustained serious injuries after a light aircraft crashed Friday in the suburbs of Honolulu, sources familiar with the incident said.

The plane crashed on a road shortly after taking off from an airport in a Honolulu suburb around noon, and the three were taken to a hospital, where one underwent surgery. The Japanese consulate general in Honolulu is trying to identify them.

The Honolulu Advertiser reported on its Web site that three people — a 59-year-old man, a woman in her 40s and a woman in her 20s — were found conscious after the crash, quoting fire department and Federal Aviation Administration officials. It did not identify them as Japanese.

The sources said the aircraft belongs to a company that gives flight training to Japanese people. The three — an instructor and two students — are believed to have been heading for a practice flight.
