Tax revenues jumped 4.2 percent in August from a year earlier to a little more than 4 trillion yen, the Finance Ministry said Monday.

Income tax revenue climbed 11.5 percent to 1.45 trillion yen, reflecting the scaling back of income tax cuts introduced in 1999 and a rise in summer bonuses to salaried workers.

Consumption tax revenue slipped 1.7 percent to 1.06 trillion yen.

Corporate tax revenue rose 7.5 percent to 725.97 billion yen, while tobacco tax revenue plunged 37.6 percent to 50.29 billion yen following the July 1 tobacco tax increase, the ministry said.
