OSAKA (Kyodo) Takeda Pharmaceutical Co., the country’s largest drugmaker, will build a new laboratory by March 2011 to enhance its development of new drugs, company sources said Thursday.

The 100 billion yen lab will be built in Osaka or Kanagawa Prefecture and bring together some 1,000 researchers now working in Osaka and Ibaraki Prefectures, the sources said.

Takeda’s U.S. patents will begin expiring in 2009 on four of its mainstay products, including an ulcer drug that accounted for most of the company’s 584.7 billion yen in consolidated sales in North America in fiscal 2005.

Takeda’s group sales for the year totaled 1.21 trillion yen.
