TAIPEI – Former Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui is planning to make a six-day trip to Japan in mid-September, his office said Saturday.
The trip, scheduled to run Sept. 12 to 17, will focus purely on sightseeing and cultural exchanges, the office said.
The visit will probably trigger criticism again from China, which sees Taiwan as a breakaway province.
Lee has visited Japan twice since stepping down, in April 2001 for heart treatment and in late 2004, when he made a weeklong tour of Kanazawa, Nagoya and Kyoto. Both visits ignited strong protests from Beijing.
