A couple were arrested Monday in the Tokyo suburb of Machida after they turned themselves in the previous evening, saying they killed their 21-year-old daughter, who had violently abused them, police said.

Shinobu Sakuma and his wife, Kayoko, both 50, told police they decided to kill their daughter, Yuka, because she regularly beat and kicked them, and the abuse had worsened over time.

According to the couple, the wife held the daughter down with a cushion as she slept Friday morning while the husband stabbed her in the chest, stomach and back with a kitchen knife.

Police said the couple then drove toward Lake Kawaguchi in Yamanashi Prefecture on Saturday. They planned to commit suicide in a forest at the foot of Mount Fuji after spending the night in the car, but became afraid.

They turned themselves in at a police station in Yamanashi Prefecture.
