A burglary suspect was shot by police in Kagamihara, Gifu Prefecture, on Sunday as he attempted to drive away after being surrounded by police vehicles.

Kozo Mizuno, 35, was hit in the left shoulder, according to the police. He was placed under arrest on suspicion of obstructing police in the performance of their duties.

According to the police, Mizuno tried to drive away in a car that had an unregistered license plate after officers in unmarked vehicles surrounded him in a parking lot and tried to question him. The incident occurred shortly past midnight.

Mizuno drove his car back and forth into the police cars, and three officers responded by firing a total of seven shots, one of which struck Mizuno.

He had been wanted by the Aichi police on suspicion of burglary, and the Gifu Prefectural Police were looking for the car, which did not have a registered plate.
