A new branch of the Yurikamome Line has been finished and will officially open on Monday, Yurikamome Co. officials said Saturday.

About 200 people, including Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara, attended a ceremony near Toyosu subway station to mark the opening of the Ariake-Toyosu branch.

"We now have secured reliable access to Tokyo's waterfront area," Ishihara during the ceremony. "From now on, the area will even be more important for Tokyoites."

Ishihara later took a ride on the extension.

The new section will give commuters direct access from the Yurikamome Line to the Yurakucho subway line at Toyosu subway station.

Several new buildings, including the new campus of Shibaura Institute of Technology and a new shopping complex, are scheduled to open around Toyosu station.
