OSAKA (Kyodo) The Osaka High Court convicted and gave a suspended sentence Monday to a former Kyoto police station chief for helping to cover up the force’s responsibility in the 1997 death of a man being held in custody.

In reversing a lower court acquittal, Masayoshi Takasaki, 62, was sentenced to 18 months, suspended for three years. Takasaki was chief of the Kujo Police Station at the time of the incident, which did not come to light until a whistle-blower stepped forward in 2002.
