A national consensus will be necessary for NHK to use viewer fees to expand its international broadcasts, the public broadcaster’s president, Genichi Hashimoto, said Thursday.

Hashimoto was responding to reporters to Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi’s call the previous day for a cut to the number of channels and an expansion in its international broadcasting service.
