A ruling Liberal Democratic Party panel endorsed a proposal Wednesday to expand the scope of national elections in which people living overseas can vote, LDP officials said.

The proposed legislation to revise the Public Offices Election Law would allow expatriates to vote in elections involving individual candidates in constituencies.

Expatriates are currently allowed to vote in the proportional representation segment, in which ballots are cast for political parties or groupings that put up lists of candidates for the House of Representatives and House of Councilors.

The government plans to present the proposal to the Diet during the current session.
