A pleasure boat with two men onboard sank Monday after colliding with a crane ship in Beppu Bay off Oita Prefecture, killing one man and leaving another missing, the Japan Coast Guard said.

The two were thrown out of the 4-meter pleasure boat into the sea in the collision shortly after 7 a.m. about 500 meters off the city of Beppu. The pleasure boat soon sank, while the crane ship left the scene, Coast Guard officials said, quoting anglers who witnessed the collision.

Oita Coast Guard rescuers pulled one man, identified as the 72-year-old Kiyoji Yoshitomi, from the sea, but he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. His companion, Masumi Maki, 69, remains missing, the JCG said. The two were from the city of Beppu.
