HIROSHIMA – The Maritime Self-Defense Force said Thursday four rounds for use in submachineguns are missing at its armory in Edashima, Hiroshima Prefecture, and the MSDF is looking for a former MSDF serviceman who is wanted on suspicion of stealing 20 other rounds.
According to the MSDF Kure Headquarters in Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture, the four rounds were unaccounted for on April 27.
The 5.56-mm rounds were taken off the destroyer Samidare on Dec. 14 and were kept at the MSDF armory in Edashima while the vessel underwent a routine inspection, the officials said.
Former MSDF Petty Officer 3rd Class Yoshitaka Moriya is wanted on suspicion of stealing 20 rounds when he was posted at the armory between May 2003 and last January.
The MSDF discovered 20 rounds were missing last December. They were found at Moriya’s residence in the city of Hiroshima in April.
