MATSUE, Shimane Pref. – The Matsue District Court sentenced a man to 22 months in prison Thursday for abusing and injuring his 3-year-old stepson.
Takahisa Ohama, 24, kicked the boy, swung him by his ankles and banged his head several times against a futon on the floor at his apartment in Izumo, Shimane Prefecture, on July 12. The attack caused a brain hemorrhage and the boy temporarily fell into a coma.
“It’s heinous to keep abusing a boy who can’t fight by himself,” Judge Kentaro Iijima said.
Prosecutors had demanded a 30-month prison term.
But the judge decided on a shorter after determining that the stepfather abused the boy partly because his wife “did not care about her family.”
“The boy takes to the defendant and will be waiting for him to come home,” the judge said, suggesting that the sooner Ohama is out of prison, the sooner he can come home, which would make the boy happy.
Ohama’s defense counsel had called for a suspended prison term.
