NAGOYA (Kyodo) Lufthansa said Thursday it will operate seven flights a week between Frankfurt and Chubu Centrair International Airport, scheduled to open near here in February.

The German airline currently operates five flights between the two cities.

Lufthansa said it expects more tourists as well as business travelers from Toyota Motor Corp. and other automakers in the area to use its service.

Lufthansa became the first European airline to serve Nagoya airport in 1991.

The new airport, under construction on reclaimed land off Tokoname, south of Nagoya, in Aichi Prefecture, is slated to open Feb. 17.
