A high school girl died and another was seriously injured after they fell about 10 meters from a supermarket roof in an apparent suicide attempt in Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture, police said Monday.

A passerby found the girls lying on a road beside the supermarket shortly after 8 p.m. on Sunday.

According to investigators, the two girls attended the same prefectural high school. One of the girls, aged 15, died about seven hours after the fall while the other, aged 16, survived.

Police said they have discovered evidence that indicates the girls were trying to kill themselves.

A 1.5-meter high fence runs around the perimeter of the supermarket roof. The girls' belongings were found by it, police said.
