A 73-year-old woman was arrested Sunday on suspicion of attempted murder after her two grandsons were assaulted at their home in Sekijo, Ibaraki Prefecture, the day before.
Police identified the suspect as Chiyo Kikuchi, the grandmother of brothers Reito, 7, and Etsufumi, 4. The boys were apparently attacked as they were playing outside.
Police quoted the suspect as saying she wanted to cause trouble for her daughter-in-law but had not intended to kill the children.
