The body of a 43-year-old German man who went missing while climbing Mount Akaishi in the southern Japan Alps in November has been recovered, according to local police.

Gerlach Steffen Herbert, who lived in Tanabe, Wakayama Prefecture, went missing Nov. 23 on the 3,120-meter mountain. His family filed a request with police six days later to search for him.

The police said they found his body and tent about 150 meters from a lodge May 12 but were unable to recover him and his equipment until Tuesday due to unfavorable weather.

They said most of his belongings, including equipment for cold weather and a sleeping bag, had been left behind at the lodge.
