The nation's international airports were crowded Tuesday with vacationers returning from overseas trips as the Golden Week holidays wound down.

An estimated 40,000 travelers were expected to return Tuesday to Narita airport and about 16,000 travelers were expected to arrive at Kansai airport, airport operators said.

The peak will be Wednesday, the last day of the weeklong holidays, which include the national holidays of April 29 and May 3 through 5.

According to Narita International Airport Corp., an estimated 809,000 travelers will use the airport between April 28 and next Monday, up 70 percent from the corresponding period last year.

The immigration office at Kansai airport expects 292,000 passengers, up 90 percent from a year earlier, to use the airport from April 28 to Sunday.
