OSAKA – Department stores sales in the Osaka area marked a 1.9 percent year-on-year rise in September after the Hanshin Tigers won their first Central League pennant in 18 years, an industry body said Thursday.
Overall sales at Hanshin Department Store Ltd. and eight other department store chain operators in the Osaka area totaled 84.4 billion yen, backed by a 52.4 percent leap in sales at Hanshin Department Store Ltd., the Kinki Department Stores Association said. Hanshin Department Store is a subsidiary of Hanshin Electric Railway Co., sponsor of the pro baseball team.
The sales logged by the nine department stores eclipsed their year-before levels for the first time in 18 months, the association said.
The 52.4 percent increase in sales at Hanshin Department Store is equivalent to about 4 billion yen, it said.
Keihan Department Store Ltd. was the sole year-on-year winner among the eight non-Hanshin department stores.
