Sanyo Electric Co. will boost global monthly production capacity of lithium-ion batteries by 50 percent to 58 million units by March 31, 2005.

With the plan, Sanyo will address rapidly growing demand for the rechargeable battery for use in cell phones, notebook computers and digital cameras, the firm said Monday.

It will also further solidify Sanyo’s position as the world’s largest maker of lithium-ion batteries amid increasing competition from South Korean and Chinese manufacturers, the company said.

Sanyo will invest 16 billion yen to build a new plant on the premises of its existing lithium-ion battery factory in Tokushima Prefecture and purchase machinery for the new plant, it said.

The new plant, set to become operational in May, will increase the monthly production capacity of the entire Tokushima facility to 20 million units, up 5 million.
