A 21-year-old university student was arrested Monday for allegedly stabbing and seriously wounding his 18-year-old girlfriend in Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture, over the weekend, local police said.

Kazuya Inagaki was arrested at the scene. The victim's house had been under surveillance since Inagaki was placed on a nationwide wanted list for abducting the girl in his car and assaulting her Sept. 18, after she tried to end the relationship.

Inagaki allegedly entered the victim's house just after midnight Sunday by breaking a bathroom window at the rear. The teen, who was sleeping on the second floor, was stabbed in the abdomen and arm.

Inagaki broke into the girl's house despite the presence of two police officers who were providing round-the-clock surveillance from a car parked about 30 meters from the residence. The officers were unaware of the break-in occurring right under their noses until the victim's mother alerted them, police said.
