NAHA, Okinawa Pref. – A male diver died and three other people are in critical condition after being found unconscious Saturday morning aboard a pleasure boat that was berthed at a port on Izena island, Okinawa Prefecture, police said.
The dead man was identified as Akira Hayamizu, 55, from Tokyo’s Setagaya Ward. The three others, staff of the dive shop, are still unconscious, according to the police. The four had slept in the cabin of the vessel, which belonged to the dive shop.
Shortly before 7 a.m., the captain of the boat, who spent the night on deck, called out to the four but received no response, according to police.
The four have no external injuries but an air conditioner was switched on in the boat, police said, adding they suspect the four suffered carbon monoxide poisoning, possibly due to a problem with the boat’s electric generator.
Six staff of the diving shop set off with six divers from Naha port on Friday morning. They went diving off Iheya Island before berthing at a port on Izena Island, police said.
Some slept on the boat while the others stayed at an inn on the island, they said.
