A train on the JR Kansai Line struck and killed someone on a grade crossing in Yao, Osaka Prefecture, late Monday near where three elderly people committed suicide by crouching on the tracks and getting run over.

According to authorities, the train driver spotted a human silhouette on the tracks Monday night and activated the emergency brake. The victim, whose gender has not been disclosed, remains unidentified.

The incident occurred at around 11:40 p.m. on a grade crossing in Yao's Yasunaka district. The train, with about 20 passengers on board, was bound for Naniwa in the city of Osaka.

A 61-year-old man, his 69-year-old wife and the woman's 81-year-old brother were killed by a train in the same area in the early hours of Saturday in what police described as a suicide pact among the three.
