Popular “rakugo” storyteller Shumputei Ryusho died Monday of stomach cancer at a Tokyo hospital. He was 82.

Ryusho, whose real name was Yasuo Akimoto, was known for creating about 100 comic rakugo stories and appearing in movies.

He also held several prominent posts, such as chief of the rakugo storytellers’ association.
