Japan will provide Afghanistan with up to 794 million yen in grants to improve its television broadcasting facilities in Kabul, the Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

The facilities upgrade is designed to improve Kabul residents' access to information about health and welfare, the ministry said.

After the planned improvements are completed, almost all residents of the city will have access to television broadcasts, it said.

The aid is part of $500 million in assistance for Afghanistan pledged by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi during international talks on rebuilding the country in January last year.
