Sharp Corp., Sony Corp. and 68 other companies said Tuesday they have set up a consortium to jointly develop 3D display technologies. The 3D Consortium will be coordinated by five core firms -- Sharp, Sony, Sanyo Electric Co., NTT Data Corp. and Itochu Corp.

It also comprises Internet-related firms, broadcasters and academic institutions.

The 3D display technologies in question are expected to be used in a wide rage of sectors, such as medical services, education and games, with the market likely to expand rapidly, consortium officials said.

The consortium plans to promote research and development of 3D technologies in both the software and hardware fields, the officials said.
