Oita Gov. Morihiko Hiramatsu, in office since 1979 and known for his local revitalization campaign of “one village, one product,” said Monday he will retire at the end of his sixth term in April.

“Now that the 21st century has begun, I’d like to let new talent take charge of Oita,” the 78-year-old Hiramatsu said. He denied that he is retiring because of old age or because he has been criticized for holding office too long.
