South Africa has informed Japan that it has decided to ban Japanese ships from fishing for tuna within its economic waters from next February, a diplomatic source in South Africa said.

The South African government notified Tokyo of its decision through the embassy in Johannesburg, giving Japan a final six-month contract to fish for tuna in its waters until January 2003, the source said Friday.
