Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi and U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell reaffirmed Thursday that Tokyo and Washington will continue to take a common stance on North Korea, according to a Japanese official.

They also agreed to hold sub-Cabinet-level talks regarding medium- and long-term bilateral political cooperation in Tokyo in late August, the official said.

The United States will be represented at the talks by Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage.

Kawaguchi and Powell are in the capital of Brunei this week to attend high-profile negotiations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
