People born in winter and spring were the most numerous lottery winners in Japan for a second straight year, Mizuho Bank said Thursday.

The bank surveyed the zodiac signs of 3,500 winners who claimed over 50,000 yen in prizes from lotteries, including Numbers and Loto 6, in February and March. Oddly enough, for the second year in a row, the winter and spring signs won the top four spots.

Ranked first as the luckiest sign was Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) accounting for 8.7 percent of the winners, followed by Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 28) and Aries (March 21-April 19) at 8.6 percent each, and Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) at 8.5 percent.

Surveys regarding the Jumbo lottery also showed high rankings for these four signs.

According to the Mizuho survey, the only summer zodiac that made it into the best five was Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) for both years. Gemini (May 21-June 21) was the unluckiest, with only 6.3 percent, scoring last in both years, the bank said.

Statistics from the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry show that February has been the month with the fewest births for over two decades.

This makes the survey findings even more interesting, as the large number of lottery winners with cold season zodiac signs cannot simply be explained by population distribution, a bank official said.
