Japan's major electronics makers either narrowed their losses or posted profits in the April-June quarter, aided by recovering semiconductor sales and restructuring efforts, according to quarterly earnings results released Tuesday.

Toshiba Corp., the world's second-biggest chip maker, had a net loss of 18.8 billion yen in the three months ended June 30, compared with a loss of 33.4 billion yen a year ago. Sales rose 2 percent to 1.19 trillion yen.

Sales of chips and flat panels for computers rose 12 percent in the first quarter to 300 billion yen, narrowing the loss at its parts business by about two-thirds to 6.6 billion yen. Toshiba maintained its first-half and full-year earnings forecasts.
