An industry group comprising major electronics makers has launched an English-language Web site to market surplus semiconductor manufacturing equipment and facilities, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association said Monday.

The English version of the Japanese site that opened last September is run by JEITA's Semiconductor Industrial Affairs Committee, which counts as members 16 firms, including Fujitsu Ltd., Hitachi Ltd., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Mitsubishi Electric Corp., NEC Corp., Ricoh Co., Sanyo Electric Co., Sharp Corp., Sony Corp. and Toshiba Corp.

The site offers information on surplus equipment wanted and for sale to companies, organizations and educational institutions active in fields related to semiconductors and related products. Its services are not available to individuals.

The group decided to open the English version in response to growing requests by foreign concerns, aiming to assist foreign companies and create a global information site, JEITA said, noting that 20 companies have registered on the Japanese site.

"By opening the new Web site, the committee anticipates more dynamic and effective use of surplus equipment," JEITA said. The market for surplus semiconductor manufacturing facilities is currently worth about 20 billion yen, although the latent market potential is estimated at about 30 billion yen, it said.

The site can be found at home.jeita.or.jp/device/english/semi/surplus .
