About 100 unionized workers staged a demonstration Wednesday outside a mobile-telephone plant affiliated with Mitsubishi Electric Corp. in Bretagne, western France, to protest a company decision to shut down the facility.

About 120 workers from the plant also staged a demonstration outside the Japanese Embassy in Paris and demanded negotiations with Mitsubishi Electric.

The embassy declined to intervene and the protesters broke up after leaving a letter of protest at the embassy gate.

Mitsubishi Electric plans to shut down the Bretagne factory this year and build a new plant in China.
