OSAKA -- Matsushita Refrigeration Co., a refrigerator-making unit of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., will shut down its factory in Osaka in August to step up its cost-cutting efforts, officials at the parent company said Thursday.

Some 200 employees at the Osaka factory, as well as its production equipment, will be transferred to the company's main factory in Kusatsu, Shiga Prefecture, which also serves as company headquarters, the officials said.

The 30,000-sq.-meter plot that the factory sits on will probably be sold, they added.

Matsushita Refrigeration also decided to shut down a factory in Mie Prefecture in August.
