A protest by a group of fishermen Tuesday blocked a government plan to resume a land reclamation project in Isahaya Bay that has been suspended for almost a year.

The group of some 30 fishermen from Fukuoka, Nagasaki and Kumamoto prefectures began their protest at around 8 a.m. at the floodgate in Takaki, Nagasaki Prefecture, where the government planned to build on the western portion of the reclaimed land, which is now dry enough for agricultural activity.

The project was put on hold in February following protests by local fishermen and seaweed farmers. They claimed the project had caused a poor crop of seaweed, or "nori," in the area.
