Nagoya University and a prestigious university in France will begin offering a master's degree in business administration in April.

Officials said Nagoya University's tieup with Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussees marks the first time a national university in Japan has created a full-scale MBA program with a foreign institution.

The tieup comes as national and private universities throughout Japan plan to create MBA programs in their economics-related departments to try to survive stiff competition, the officials said.

The new two-year program will be open to 10 people with master's degrees or university graduates with more than four years of work experience, they said. The entrance examination will be held in February, they said.

Classes will be conducted in English.

European and U.S. university professors from ENPC will design the curriculum, with support from Nagoya University's economics and engineering faculties, according to the officials.

ENPC, founded in 1747 by King Louis XV, is the oldest of the Grandes Ecoles, elite institutions aimed at educating top business leaders and civil servants. The French name means National School of Bridges and Roads.
