New York share prices shot up Wednesday, surprising players on the Tokyo market.

The strong New York rally came at a time when Japanese investors were preoccupied with worries about negative economic and corporate earnings prospects at home.

On the New York Stock Exchange, the technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index soared 83.74 points, or 4.28 percent, to 2,046.84, closing above the 2,000 level for the first time since Aug. 7.
