The first memorial service for more than 100 people who have died in accidents while climbing Mount Daisen since 1937 was held Monday.

During the memorial service at Daisenji Temple in Daisen, Tottori Prefecture, some 20 relatives and fellow climbers offered prayers for their loved ones who died on the mountain.

They also called for the prevention of further tragedies.

The 1,729-meter mountain has claimed the lives of 109 hikers and climbers -- 21 from within the prefecture -- since 1937, when local authorities began to keep records.
