Defense Agency chief Gen Nakatani, currently visiting Indonesia, said Tuesday that he has ordered a strict alert for all Self-Defense Forces bases and U.S. military bases in Japan, following a series of apparent terrorist attacks in the United States.

Nakatani also said he has ordered a curfew for SDF troops taking part in a U.N. peacekeeping mission in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Defense Agency sources in Tokyo earlier said Nakatani is canceling his planned trip to East Timor and will return to Tokyo today.

Nakatani arrived in Indonesia on Monday for talks with the country's leaders. He was to visit East Timor on Wednesday to meet with local leaders and U.N. officials.

Also in Tokyo, the Defense Agency decided to strengthen security at facilities of the SDF and the U.S. military, agency officials said.

The agency convened an emergency meeting of senior officials at around 1 a.m. Wednesday, the officials said.
