Toyota Motor Corp. said Monday it would halt manufacturing operations from Monday evening through early this morning due to the approach of a powerful typhoon in the Tokai region in central Japan.

The decision will affect the production of some 6,000 motor vehicles, the nation's biggest automaker said.

The decision applies to almost all operations at Totoya's principal plant in Toyota, Aichi Prefecture, as well as 11 other plants and those of group companies, and is a precautionary step against any accidents that might arise from Typhoon Danas, the 15th of the season.
