Guatemala President Alfonso Portillo will pay a weeklong official visit to Japan starting May 15 for talks with Japanese leaders, the state-run Mexican news agency Notimex said Friday.

Portillo will be the first Guatemalan president to visit Japan. He is expected to meet with Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on May 17.

The summit would be Koizumi's first face-to-face meeting with a foreign leader since he came to office April 26.

The Japanese and Guatemalan governments are expected to conclude an agreement during Portillo's visit to fund the preservation of Guatemalan culture.
